The industry has come a long way in manufacturing large quantities of pre-made stock hair systems for both men and women. When we first started Advent in 1994, the quality of the stock units was very poor, but you should see them now!

Most successful hair replacement studios will coerce you into signing an annual contract for a Hair Program where you receive 4, 6 or 8 heads of hair and usually monthly services to re-bond the units on. What they generally don't tell you is that after they make the template, they stick it in a drawer, order the STOCK unit in 5 weeks, then call you and say "Hey, your CUSTOM unit just arrived and it's a beauty!"

Now, I gotta tell you - I don't fault the studio for ordering a stock unit, but it does ruffle my feathers a little when they charge you top $$ and make you believe that they ordered you a custom unit!

Truth be told, today's stock units are fine quality and readily available in a dizzying array of base materials, colors and densities. BUT, most stock units are 7" x 9" or 8" x 10". So, for most guys, they need to be trimmed down.

You may be wondering why the studio made the template in the first place. Two reasons - 1.) They want to fake you out and make you think you're getting a custom and 2.) Before you arrive for the cut-in, the tech traces the outline of the template onto the 8" x 10" large stock base and trims it with a razor blade. Viola! A pre-made unit converted to a custom unit!

Side Note: From my research, about 25% of the studios will tell you that they are indeed selling you a stock unit.

I've personally worn both stocks & customs and normally go with a custom in order to get a custom grey blend and density, but it is reassuring to know that a stock can be made to fit me IF I need one quick.

Most men & women become believers in stocks once they try one. And if it works for you, it eliminates the #1 headache we all have - procrastinating too long with our old unit before ordering a replacement and walking around with a ratty looking unit.

A custom order is required in the following situations;

- Your head is not a perfect contour

- You need grey in the unit other than the standard 10/20/40% grey that is EVENLY distributed

- You would like varying degress of density

- You would like lighter color hi-lites
